Serie A | Roma 1-1 Napoli: Match Report

Start

In a thrilling Serie A encounter at the Stadio Olimpico, AS Roma snatched a dramatic 1-1 draw against league leaders Napoli, courtesy of a stoppage-time strike from Angelino. The result ended Napoli’s seven-game winning streak and prevented Antonio Conte’s side from extending their lead at the top of the table.

The match was a testament to Roma’s resilience, as they fought back from a goal down to secure a well-deserved point. Napoli had taken the lead through Leonardo Spinazzola, a former Roma player, who chose not to celebrate out of respect for his old club.

Roma’s manager made some surprising lineup choices, including starting Rensch on the wing instead of Saelemaekers, and opting for Pisilli in midfield. The attack was led by Soulé and Shomurodov, with Dybala and Dovbyk on the bench. Napoli, on the other hand, fielded a strong lineup featuring Spinazzola on the left and a potent front three of Politano, Lukaku, and Neres.

The first half saw Napoli dominate proceedings, with Lukaku causing problems for his former team. However, clear-cut chances were at a premium due to tight marking and congested spaces. Spinazzola’s goal came against the run of play, as he expertly lobbed Svilar after a precise pass from Juan Jesus.

Roma showed more attacking intent in the second half, introducing Paredes and Saelemaekers to increase their offensive threat. The home side came close to equalizing when Paredes hit the post from a free-kick. As the game wore on, both teams made substitutions, with Napoli bringing on Mazzocchi and Simeone, while Roma introduced Dybala and Baldanzi.

Just when it seemed Napoli would hold on for a crucial victory, Angelino emerged as Roma’s hero. The Spanish full-back met Saelemaekers’ cross with a sublime left-footed volley that flew past Meret, sending the Olimpico into raptures.

The draw means Napoli’s lead at the top remains at three points over Inter Milan, while Roma’s spirited performance keeps them in the hunt for European places.
