In a crucial encounter between two teams hovering just above the relegation zone, Genoa emerged victorious against Parma, clinching their first home win of the season. The match, which took place at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, saw both sides grappling with significant injury concerns.
The game’s decisive moment came in the second half when Morten Thorsby’s deflected effort found the back of the net, giving Genoa the edge they needed. This fortunate turn of events proved to be the difference in a closely fought contest.
The first half saw both teams create chances, with Genoa coming close when Johan Vasquez’s attempt from a corner was blocked, and the rebound saved by Parma’s goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Parma had their opportunities too, with Ange Yoann Bonny firing wide on a counter-attack.
Genoa’s Andrea Pinamonti nearly scored with a close-range header from Fabio Miretti’s cross, but his effort hit the side-netting. The hosts suffered a setback just before halftime when Milan Badelj was forced off with a hamstring injury.
The second half saw more action, with Parma’s Pontus Almqvist testing Nicola Leali with a volley. However, it was Genoa who broke the deadlock. A clever pass from Miretti set up Frendrup, whose shot took a significant deflection off Enrico Delprato, looping over Suzuki and into the far corner.
As the match progressed, Genoa looked more likely to extend their lead than Parma did to equalize. Suzuki was called into action again, tipping Lior Kassa’s effort over the bar from Stefano Sabelli’s cross.
The victory was particularly sweet for new Genoa owner Dan Sucu, who was present at Marassi for the first time to witness his team’s crucial win. This result could prove vital for Genoa as they look to distance themselves from the relegation battle in the second half of the season.
