Torino head coach Paolo Vanoli expressed his frustration and disappointment following his team’s 1-0 loss to Roma in Serie A. The defeat marked Torino’s third consecutive away loss, following defeats to Inter Milan and Cagliari.
Vanoli did not mince words in his post-match comments, stating, “I am very angry. You can’t completely lose a half (the first) on a night like this. And you can’t have so little personality. We knew we would face a wounded Roma, but for this very reason, we can’t afford such a passive approach. The team should have been much more aggressive.”
The coach was particularly displeased with his team’s lack of personality and playing style, two cornerstones of Torino’s approach under his leadership. “We need to rediscover that personality that leads you to want to play and be a protagonist,” Vanoli continued. “It’s one thing to wait, another to be passive. Unfortunately, this phenomenon had already occurred in the first half against Como, but there we had the excuse of coming from 4 consecutive defeats. This time there was none of that. We need to work and change.”
Addressing the substitutions made during the game, Vanoli explained, “With Sanabria, we had little depth. I was looking for more with Vlasic, Njie, and Karamoh. There was a little more. But we can’t always wait to take a slap to react.”
Looking ahead, Vanoli hinted at potential changes in the team’s approach. “We need to regain the desire to attack, to play,” he said. “We must rediscover the personality to start playing football again. Let’s roll up our sleeves and find new solutions. We can also play with four at the back; it could be the way to get out of this moment.”
