Jean-Pierre Papin, the legendary striker who played for both AC Milan and Club Brugge, shared his thoughts on the upcoming Champions League match between his former clubs with La Gazzetta dello Sport. Papin, who spent a year at Brugge in the mid-80s and later played for Milan from 1992 to 1994, offered insights on both teams and reflected on his own career.
Reminiscing about his time in Brugge, Papin said, “The passionate city remains, living for football with its two teams. It reminds me a bit of Bergamo, with Atalanta: a small city with a warm stadium.” Regarding the current Brugge team, he commented, “Brugge plays with organization and heart. They will give 100% until the end. I don’t see them play often, but we all know Mignolet: he’s still a good goalkeeper.”
When asked about Milan coach Fonseca’s decision to leave Leao out of the starting lineup, Papin approved: “Yes, he sent the right message. Well done. He had done something similar at Lille too. With players, it’s important to get messages across, and if it’s on the field… even better.”
Papin, now coaching Marseille’s second team, shared his coaching philosophy: “I’m satisfied because we’re first, with 15 goals scored and 6 conceded. I like not conceding goals.” He added, “I defend deep and counterattack. I have players suited for this style of football, and I do it without problems.”
Regarding Milan’s current form, Papin observed, “It’s a team still finding itself, not at 100%. It needs time, and Brugge comes at the right moment. Milan is superior: if they enter the field well, they can win easily.”
On the importance of a full stadium, Papin emphasized, “Oh, a lot. In my time, the stadium in the Champions League group stage was half empty, then it would fill up for a semi-final. But for Brugge, I expect people and noise: the fans know Milan must win, they will help.”
When asked about the Scudetto race, Papin was diplomatic: “This year I’m undecided. I’ve seen a good Juve, Milan is coming back, Inter is at its level, Napoli is not bad. I give 25% to all of them.”
Papin also touched on a personal note, discussing his daughter Emily who has cerebral lesions. “She lives and does everything with us. She just doesn’t speak. We communicate with signs, we’ve developed a method with eight basic signs, which she understood immediately.” He added, “In Monaco, we created an association to help other children with the same problems. For thirty years, we’ve continued to pass on messages and help people. You understand that the most important thing in life is to be healthy.”
