Arsenal’s new Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori has opened up about his experiences in London since his summer move from Bologna. In a wide-ranging interview with the BBC, the 22-year-old discussed his efforts to adapt to English culture, including the language and cuisine.

“I want to fully experience this new adventure, as if I were truly English,” Calafiori explained. “Starting with the language: since childhood, I’ve always had a passion for learning languages, and I began with Netflix and song lyrics. I’m still learning, and I want to improve.”

Addressing the oft-maligned English cuisine, Calafiori offered a surprisingly positive review: “The food in England? I expected worse, it’s not that bad. I’ve even tried fish and chips – once a month is doable, even if it’s not healthy.”

The young defender’s move to Arsenal came after a standout season with Bologna, with the Gunners spending nearly 50 million euros for his signature. Calafiori revealed that a surprise phone call from manager Mikel Arteta played a crucial role in his decision.

“First he texted me, then asked if he could call,” Calafiori recounted. “He was very humble and approachable on the phone. He wanted to explain the situation and where I could improve. He tried to convince me, but in truth, I was already convinced. Not just because of Arsenal, but especially because of Mikel.”

Calafiori also spoke warmly of his relationship with Italian football legend Daniele De Rossi: “I always ask for his opinion on my most important decisions, and he always gives good advice. I had talked to him about Arsenal, and he replied, ‘It’s one of the biggest opportunities for you to improve as a player.'”

The defender didn’t forget to express gratitude to his former coach at Bologna, Thiago Motta: “Last season was undoubtedly my best season, and the coach helped me a lot. He was the first to deploy me as a center-back, after I had always played as a left-back. I wanted to show Serie A fans that I wasn’t the player they had seen a few years earlier, and I’m happy to have changed their minds.”
