Felipe Melo announces retirement plans

Start

Former Juventus and Inter Milan midfielder Felipe Melo has revealed his plans to retire from professional football, but not before pursuing one last ambitious goal. The 41-year-old Brazilian, currently playing for Fluminense, hopes to participate in the expanded FIFA Club World Cup in the United States in 2025 before hanging up his boots.

Melo, whose contract with Fluminense expires on December 31, 2024, shared his intentions on Instagram: “I have a contract with Fluminense that expires this December. I hope it can be extended, as my goal to conclude my career is the Club World Cup. The decision to stop playing football at the end of next year has already been made. Immediately after, we’ll see what I’ll do, but yes, I will become a football coach.”

Fluminense secured their spot in the new 32-team Club World Cup by winning the recent Copa Libertadores. This tournament represents Melo’s desired stage for his final performance as a player.

Throughout his career in Italy, Melo experienced mixed fortunes. He shone brightest during his first Serie A season with Fiorentina, making 40 appearances and scoring 2 goals. This performance earned him a €25 million move to Juventus, where he struggled to make a significant impact amidst the club’s identity crisis.

After a stint in Turkey with Galatasaray, Melo returned to Italy with Inter Milan in 2015, reuniting with Roberto Mancini. However, his time at Inter also fell short of expectations, with 38 appearances and just one goal.

In recent years, Melo has reinvented himself as a center-back at Fluminense, showcasing his versatility. Now, as he approaches his 42nd birthday, he seeks one final challenge on the global stage before transitioning to a coaching career.

Melo’s career has been marked by both highs and lows, often accompanied by controversial behavior. As he prepares for his final act as a player, he hopes to secure a contract extension with Fluminense, compete in the Club World Cup, and then bid farewell to his playing days to embark on a new journey from the sidelines.
