In an exclusive interview with Tuttosport, former Italian defender Christian Panucci has enthusiastically endorsed Empoli’s center-back Ardian Ismajli as a potential signing for Juventus. Panucci, who first brought Ismajli into the Albanian national team, shared his insights on the player’s qualities and potential.
“I’ve known Ismajli well for many years: he’s become one of the best defenders in Serie A and he’s an exceptional guy. I consider him ready to make the leap to a big club. I’m not at all surprised that Juventus is following him. He would be a very useful addition to the Bianconeri. Ardian deserves a chance like this,” Panucci stated with pride.
Panucci revealed how he discovered Ismajli: “I’m talking about it for the first time and I’m doing it very willingly. In 2018, I was the coach of the Albanian national team and I was traveling around Europe looking for new players to call up. I was scouting in person and I saw him in Croatia, where Ardian was playing for Hajduk Split. He immediately impressed me.”
The former Milan and Roma defender emphasized Ismajli’s loyalty and character: “He accepted the Albanian national team for me and for how much I had spent to convince him. He was a man of his word: Kosovo didn’t want to lose him, but Ardian kept the promise he made to me.”
Discussing Ismajli’s strengths, Panucci noted, “He’s really very good in the last 20 meters defending the goal. Very solid and reliable in marking.” He also highlighted Ismajli’s tactical versatility: “He can easily play both in a four-man defense and in a three. He has good technique and an excellent sense of position.”
When asked about Ismajli’s readiness for a top club, Panucci was unequivocal: “For me, yes. He has become a very reliable defender and has made an incredible rise in recent years, establishing himself as one of the best center-backs in our league. Even at a temperamental level, he is very solid: both for skill and seriousness, he would be perfect for the Juve style.”
Panucci’s endorsement comes as Juventus scouts have been closely monitoring Ismajli, including during recent matches for both Empoli and the Albanian national team. With Juventus potentially looking to strengthen their defense, Ismajli’s proven Serie A experience and strong character make him an attractive prospect for the Turin giants.
