Juventus scout Openda and Lukebakio in Italy-Belgium clash

Start

Juventus’ sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli was in attendance at the Stadio Olimpico for the Italy-Belgium match, with an eye on potential transfer targets. The game provided an opportunity for Giuntoli to assess several players, particularly from the Belgian squad, as Juventus looks to strengthen its attacking options.

Calciomercato report how despite coach Thiago Motta’s confidence in his current squad, there’s a recognized need for alternatives to Dusan Vlahovic in the forward line. While Giuntoli was able to observe Juventus player Andrea Cambiaso in action for Italy, his focus was primarily on the Belgian attackers.

Lois Openda, who started for Belgium, was a key figure of interest. Having faced Juventus recently in the Champions League with RB Leipzig, Openda has impressed with his goalscoring prowess. Last season, he netted 28 goals across all competitions for Leipzig, and has already scored five times this term. However, his high price tag – having been Leipzig’s record signing at €42 million – could be a significant hurdle for Juventus.

Another player on Giuntoli’s radar was Dodi Lukebakio. The versatile attacker, primarily used as a right-winger but capable of playing as a striker or attacking midfielder, offers different qualities to Openda. Known more for his dribbling skills than his goal tally, Lukebakio could be a more affordable option for Juventus. Sevilla acquired him for €10 million from Hertha Berlin in 2023, suggesting he might be available at a lower price point compared to Openda.

Both Openda and Lukebakio have contracts running until 2028 with their respective clubs, which could influence potential transfer negotiations.
