Domenico Berardi, the Sassuolo star, has given a candid interview about his career, past transfer opportunities, and future ambitions. The Italian winger, who recently returned from a serious Achilles tendon injury, shared insights into his loyalty to Sassuolo and his desire to play in the Champions League in an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport (via Calciomercato).

On his commitment to Sassuolo, Berardi said, “This is my second family, and it’s not just a saying. I’ll never forget my relationship with Dr. Squinzi and his wife, who treated me like a son and helped me grow. It was mutual love. And I have a similar bond with Giovanni Carnevali.”

Reflecting on missed opportunities, Berardi admitted, “Last year I wanted to go to Juventus, but the clubs didn’t reach an agreement. I was upset and argued with the club because it was the right time. But then I turned the page and started giving everything for Sassuolo again.”

He also revealed turning down Atalanta three years ago: “Atalanta wanted me, but I said no because I didn’t think I was suitable, especially physically, for that type of play.”

Regarding his Champions League ambitions, Berardi stated, “For the past three years, I’ve always thought about it. I want to hear the Champions League music from the pitch. It’s a deep ambition that I want to satisfy.”

On his development as a player, Berardi reflected, “Until I was 26-27, I didn’t feel mature. I always wanted to play and in those years I rejected the idea of rotation and the bench. Maybe it was also a lack of confidence in my abilities, I didn’t believe in myself 100%. I have no regrets, in the meantime I’ve understood, matured, and for two-three years I’ve been ready.”

Looking ahead, Berardi hinted at a possible move in the future: “With the mindset of a 30-year-old, I say that at 20-21 I could have believed more in myself and tried. But choices are made when they need to be made.”
