Spalletti’s Italy squad takes shape: Gabbia set for national team debut

Start

As Italy prepare for their upcoming Nations League matches against Belgium and Israel, manager Luciano Spalletti is finalizing his squad selection. One notable inclusion is AC Milan defender Matteo Gabbia, who is set to receive his first call-up to the senior national team just ahead of his 25th birthday in October.

The Italian squad will convene at Coverciano on Sunday evening, following Milan’s away match against Fiorentina. While Gabbia’s inclusion seems certain, Spalletti still has some decisions to make regarding other positions.

In attack, there’s uncertainty surrounding the potential recalls of Federico Chiesa and Nicolò Zaniolo. The goalkeeper position might see Juventus’ Michele Di Gregorio given an opportunity. In midfield, with Inter’s Nicolò Barella sidelined due to injury, Juventus’ Manuel Locatelli is competing for a spot against Roma’s Bryan Cristante and Niccolò Pisilli.

The probable squad list, as reported by Gazzetta dello Sport (via Calciomercato), includes:

Goalkeepers: Donnarumma, Vicario, Provedel (with Di Gregorio as a possibility)
Defenders: Di Lorenzo, Gatti, Bastoni, Gabbia, Calafiori, Buongiorno, Cambiaso, Bellanova, Dimarco, Udogie
Midfielders: Ricci, Fagioli, Tonali, Pellegrini, Frattesi, Zaniolo, Pisilli (with Locatelli and Cristante as alternatives)
Forwards: Retegui, Raspadori, Kean, Chiesa (with Zaccagni as an option)
