Fonseca on Leverkusen loss: “It’s the game I enjoyed the most since I’ve been coaching here”

Despite a 1-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen in their second Champions League group stage match, AC Milan manager Paulo Fonseca expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance, particularly in the second half. The Rossoneri were up against it in the first half before conceding in the 51st minute to a Victor Boniface tap in. The second ’45 saw Milan turn up the pressure, creating a number of chances that they failed to capitise on:

“We didn’t win, but this is the match I’ve enjoyed the most since I’ve been here,” Fonseca told Sky Sport after the game. “We played very well in the second half. We’re disappointed with the result, but we need to be good at understanding the game we played.”

The Portuguese coach was particularly pleased with how his team responded to early challenges, noting, “They created problems with combinations on the right flank, but we defended well during difficult moments.”

Fonseca also addressed a controversial moment involving Ruben Loftus-Cheek, stating, “When you have a situation like this, you should at least look at VAR. For me, it was a penalty.”
