Atalanta’s Ruggeri sidelined with knee Issue, set to miss Champions League match

Start

Atalanta’s injury woes continue as manager Gian Piero Gasperini faces another setback in his squad. Following the long-term absence of Marco Brescianini, the team will now be without one of its most reliable players, left-back Matteo Ruggeri, for the upcoming Champions League fixture.

Calciomercato report how the 21-year-old Italian defender, who has already made seven appearances and provided one assist this season across the European Super Cup, Champions League, and Serie A, is suffering from gonalgia in his left knee. This condition has been affecting him for some time and has now forced him to take a break from play.

Ruggeri will remain in Bergamo, where he will undergo further medical examinations to assess the extent of his condition more precisely. If there are no complications, he could potentially return to action for the match scheduled for Saturday at 18:00.

Gonalgia, the medical term for knee pain, can be a symptom of various issues including trauma, cartilage wear, inflammation, and other factors. It is typically accompanied by swelling, redness, and particularly stiffness and limited joint mobility. In most cases, if not indicative of more severe injuries, gonalgia can resolve on its own with a period of complete rest.

This injury comes at a crucial time for Atalanta, as they prepare for their second Champions League group stage match against Shakhtar Donetsk. The game will be played in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, as the Ukrainian team continues to play their “home” matches abroad due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
