Lazio’s Castellanos sidelined: Injury update and Baroni’s tactical options

Start

Reports from Italy suggest Lazio’s newly formed attacking duo may face an early setback. Fans might have to wait at least a month to see Castellanos and Dia in action together again, following their successful partnership in recent matches. Midway through the second half against Hellas Verona, Taty Castellanos signaled discomfort, clutching the inner thigh of his left leg. He reassured coach Baroni on the sideline that it was “nothing serious,” but the extent of the injury remains uncertain pending medical examinations.

Calciomercato report how team doctor Fabio Rodia stated that Castellanos was substituted as a precautionary measure. Baroni echoed this sentiment in his post-match press conference, suggesting that the player felt something but downplaying its severity. The coach also noted the toll of international duties and intercontinental travel on players’ fitness.

Castellanos, who has been a constant presence in Lazio’s lineup this season and recently debuted for Argentina’s national team, may be experiencing the consequences of his heavy workload. There are concerns that the injury could be a muscle strain.

The timing is particularly unfortunate as Castellanos had hit his stride, scoring three goals in four matches. If the fears are confirmed, the South American striker might not return to action until October, after the next international break. His participation in the upcoming match against Fiorentina is already in serious doubt. Depending on the injury’s severity, he could also miss the Europa League fixture against Dynamo Kyiv and the away game against Torino. In the worst-case scenario, Castellanos might not return until October 19 for the match against Juventus.

Baroni has several options to replace Castellanos. Noslin, who the coach believes can play across the attacking line, could be deployed either behind Dia as a striker or as the main forward himself. Alternatively, Castrovilli could play behind one of the other available attackers. While adapting players like Pedro or shifting Zaccagni or Tchaouna to a central role are possibilities, they seem less likely given Baroni’s tactical approach since joining Lazio.
