In a post-match interview, Genoa manager Alberto Gilardino expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance in their 1-1 draw against Roma. He highlighted the team’s resilience and second-half improvement as key factors in securing a point against a formidable opponent.
Gilardino began by acknowledging the challenges his team faced in the first half, stating, “I had asked the team to be resilient throughout the match. In the first half, we struggled, especially with maintaining proper distances.” However, he praised the team’s reaction after the break, saying, “In the second half, we had a reaction that was due to the team’s merit. We put Roma in difficulty, and considering our second-half performance, I believe the result is fair.”
The manager explained his tactical adjustments, particularly the use of Frendrup to provide width and versatility. “I needed a bit more width, with Frendrup able to play both wide and come inside. We created a lot of ball circulation, and with a bit more luck, we could have done better,” Gilardino noted.
He also emphasized the importance of in-game adaptability, saying, “We worked on making changes when it was necessary to turn things around. We need to work on this during the week.” Gilardino stressed the need for balance from the start of the match and understanding the opponent’s strengths.
Addressing the team’s lineup challenges, Gilardino mentioned, “Today we had players like Messias and Zanoli unavailable, two players with pace who can interpret this tactical setup. These are evaluations I’ll make week by week based on who’s available and the opponents we’ll face.”
The manager reserved special praise for De Winter, stating, “I’m happy for De Winter. I’m on his case because I believe he has incredible potential. He needs to always maintain high focus, and today he had a superb second half.”
