Paulo Sousa: “You can study them all you want, but this Inter always outsmarts you”

Former Fiorentina coach Paulo Sousa shared his insights on Serie A and the upcoming Milan-Inter clash, praising Inzaghi’s potential to start a dynasty and discussing key players. Speaking with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Sousa, currently managing Shabab Dubai, explained why he believes Inter Milan remain the strongest team in Serie A. He stated, “Without a doubt. And they have the potential to do what Juventus did,” referring to the possibility of winning consecutive league titles.

On Simone Inzaghi, Sousa commended his ability to handle pressure and his tactical evolution: “He’s become much more complete, more of a manager. From a technical point of view, there’s little to say: he has the best midfield in Italy.”

Discussing Inter’s strengths, Sousa noted, “The beauty is that you can study them as much as you want, analyze their players and game, but in the end, one of those three always finds a way to outsmart you.”

Regarding individual players, Sousa compared Calhanoglu to Rodri, stating the only thing the Inter midfielder lacks is aerial play. On Lautaro Martinez’s Ballon d’Or ambitions, he said, “I understand his ambition. We’re talking about a striker with incredible numbers, champion of Italy and South America as top scorer. If he also won the Champions League, maybe yes…”

Sousa also shared his thoughts on AC Milan and Rafael Leao: “He’s absolutely a champion, but he’s still intermittent. He needs to level out his consistency and make that small leap forward that many ask of him.”

On Juventus, Sousa believes they will compete for the title with Inter until the end. He also expresses his affection for Federico Chiesa, whom he coached at Fiorentina.

Reflecting on his time at Fiorentina, Sousa describes it as “the best period of my coaching career.” He fondly remembers the team spirit and the connection with the fans.

Sousa concludes by discussing his brief stint at Salernitana and his admiration for Atalanta’s management model. When asked about a potential return to Italian football, he leaves the door open, saying, “Never say never. I always try to propose entertaining football. I’ll continue as long as I have passion.”
