Musso set to join Atletico Madrid as Atalanta reshuffle goalkeeping options

Start

Atalanta’s goalkeeper Juan Musso is on the verge of a move to Atletico Madrid, marking a significant shift in the Italian club’s goalkeeping hierarchy. The Argentine shot-stopper, who joined Atalanta three summers ago for €20 million from Udinese, has experienced mixed fortunes during his time in Bergamo.

Calciomercato report that despite starting in Atalanta’s Serie A opener against Lecce and being in contention to play against Torino, recent developments suggest a change of plans. Manager Gian Piero Gasperini had previously indicated his desire to end the goalkeeper rotation, hinting at a preference for Marco Carnesecchi as the primary choice across all competitions.

Musso’s potential departure to Atletico Madrid, a club that has shown interest in him since 2020, seems to align with both the player’s and Atalanta’s interests. The proposed deal is likely to be structured as a loan with an obligation to buy, allowing Atalanta to move forward with Carnesecchi as their undisputed number one.

The transfer would also preserve Carnesecchi’s value, as the young goalkeeper is seen as a future asset and potential source of capital gain for Atalanta. To facilitate Musso’s move, Atalanta is already exploring options for a backup goalkeeper.

Among the candidates being considered are Marco Silvestri from Udinese, free agent Rui Patricio following his stint at Roma, and former Atalanta keeper Andrea Consigli, currently with Sassuolo.

This goalkeeping reshuffle could see immediate effects, with a potential change between the posts for Atalanta’s upcoming match against Torino. As negotiations progress, Atalanta aims to balance their squad dynamics while securing a favorable deal for all parties involved.
