Gilardino: ‘Miretti? He can add value to Genoa’

Start

Genoa manager Alberto Gilardino addressed the media ahead of his team’s upcoming Serie A match against Monza. Following their impressive draw against Inter Milan, Gilardino emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum against a challenging opponent.

The coach began by acknowledging Monza’s quality: “They are a difficult team to face. Last year they took six points from us and have players of great quality. We have the utmost respect, but also the determination to play a great game. It will be crucial to have a perfect approach, especially in duels and second balls.”

Regarding striker Andrea Pinamonti’s potential involvement, Gilardino said: “Andrea has only been training with the team for a week and is very motivated to prove his worth. However, he doesn’t have many minutes in his legs yet, as he hasn’t played friendlies or in the Coppa Italia. He could start, but it’s also possible he’ll come on during the match. I’ll make a final assessment in the last 24 hours.”

When asked about potential transfer target Nicolò Miretti, Gilardino was cautious but positive: “As I’ve already stated, with Strootman’s departure, we need to strengthen that department. We have ideas, but there are no concrete developments at the moment. There are still days left before the market closes, and we’re attentive to every opportunity. If there are chances to improve the team, we must be ready to seize them.”

Gilardino also spoke warmly about facing his former teammate and friend Alessandro Nesta, now Monza’s manager: “We already faced each other last year in the Coppa Italia against Reggiana, and meeting Nesta is always a pleasure. He’s proving to be a coach of great value and a good guy. I remember well our World Cup experience together, but especially the time at Milan when I arrived young and he, along with others, gave me great help.”

On Monza’s playing style, Gilardino noted: “I watched the Empoli game and I think they have a strong identity. Last year they alternated between three and four-man systems, and recently they’ve returned to a three-man system, enhancing their players’ characteristics. We saw skilled players in possession like Pessina and ball-winners like Bondo. Maldini is an extraordinary talent with the ball at his feet, and they also have Vignato and Mota, who offer many options.”

Gilardino concluded by emphasizing the need for his team to maintain their high standards: “We must be able to express our best, as we did against Inter, even if it will be a different challenge. We must approach the game with great determination and maintain a spirit of unity throughout the match.”
