Napoli head coach Antonio Conte addressed the media ahead of Sunday’s crucial match against Bologna. Following a disappointing 3-0 loss to Hellas Verona in their Serie A opener, Conte emphasized the need to move forward and concentrate on the upcoming challenge.
Conte analysed the Verona match, noting, “In the first half, we managed to play our game, controlling the rhythm and creating scoring opportunities. In the second half, however, we seemed to have reverted to last year’s form, which raised concerns.” He dismissed the notion that poor performance was due to physical fatigue, stating, “When there are poor performances, blame is always placed on physical decline. In reality, we need to analyse and face the facts. Against Verona, we ran as much as they did and had more possession, but we didn’t score.”
The coach expressed satisfaction with the team’s response to the defeat: “The players are very responsible. They were the first to perceive the discomfort. This week we are working well, as we did previously. I was pleased to see that the players have become aware of what happened.”
Conte acknowledged the strength of their upcoming opponents: “Bologna is an excellent team that has reached the Champions League. They won their last match here in Naples, so it will be difficult. They are a physical team that plays at an intense pace, with players skilled in one-on-one situations and counterattacks. We need to play at 110%, which is why it’s important that the entire environment is ready.”
Regarding new arrival David Neres, Conte said, “He’s a player of great quality with great imagination. He can assist and score, and can play on both the left and right. We’re happy to have him with us.” The coach also mentioned that Rafa Marin, a young defender, has improved physically and is adapting to Napoli’s style of play, which requires more involvement in building attacks compared to his previous experiences in Spain.
Addressing the team’s scoring issues, Conte remarked, “Statistics are always important and must be evaluated. We’ve played two matches where we’ve always controlled the ball. The same thing happened last year: we maintained possession but didn’t score. This situation has occurred in the first two matches as well.”
