Weston McKennie’s career at Juventus has taken a surprising turn. After being frozen out of the squad and nearly joining Aston Villa, the American midfielder is now set to sign a new contract with the Italian giants.
The 25-year-old’s time in Turin has been tumultuous. He was loaned out to Leeds United last season and was recently part of a potential swap deal involving Douglas Luiz of Aston Villa. However, personal terms could not be agreed upon, leaving McKennie in limbo.
In a dramatic shift, new Juventus coach Thiago Motta has welcomed McKennie back into the fold. The midfielder is now expected to be an integral part of the team for the upcoming season.
McKennie’s current contract is due to expire in June 2025, but he has reportedly reached an agreement to extend it until 2026, with a possible option for an additional year to 2027. According to Tuttosport, the new deal will maintain his current wages of €2.5 million per season.
This remarkable turnaround is not unprecedented for McKennie, who has previously fought his way back into the Juventus squad. The American, who turns 26 next week, initially joined Juventus from Schalke 04 in 2020 on a loan deal worth €4.5 million, before the move was made permanent for an additional €21.9 million.
