Roberto De Zerbi, the newly appointed Marseille manager, has disclosed his instrumental role in securing Mason Greenwood’s transfer from Manchester United. The former Brighton boss revealed that Greenwood was the first player he contacted upon taking charge at the French club.
In a recent interview with L’Equipe, De Zerbi shared details of his communication with Greenwood’s father, emphasizing the significance and demands of joining Marseille. “I warned him about the demands of this club, telling him: ‘OM is OM,'” De Zerbi stated, referring to Olympique de Marseille by its initials.
Despite facing protests from some Marseille supporters over Greenwood’s arrival, De Zerbi expressed his commitment to supporting the 22-year-old forward. He explained his approach to managing players, saying, “When a player becomes my player, I am the first to pin him to the wall if he makes a mistake. But towards the outside, I will always defend him as I would defend my son.”
Greenwood’s move to Marseille marks a new chapter in his career following his departure from Manchester United. The transfer has generated significant interest across Europe, with De Zerbi’s personal involvement highlighting the club’s determination to secure the young talent’s services.
