AC Milan have officially announced the signing of Brazilian defender Emerson Royal from Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth over €15 million. This transfer marks a significant addition to Milan’s squad as they prepare for the upcoming season and their return to the UEFA Champions League.
Emerson, who has been a versatile player capable of operating as a right-back, wing-back, or even in a central defensive role, had been on Milan’s radar for several months. The negotiations, which began in earnest back in June, culminated in an agreement that reflects both the player’s desire to join Milan and the club’s need for defensive reinforcements.
The 25-year-old defender had multiple offers from other clubs but chose Milan as his preferred destination. His decision was influenced by the club’s strong project and their participation in the Champions League, which he sees as an opportunity to showcase his talents on a larger stage. Emerson’s commitment to Milan was evident as he turned down offers from four or five other teams, indicating his focus on joining the Rossoneri.
Milan’s head coach, Paulo Fonseca, played a crucial role in the pursuit of Emerson, emphasizing the need for a right-back with different characteristics than the current options available in the squad.
A statement on Milan’s official website confirmed the news:
