Thierry Henry: “Wenger told me I was wasting my time at Juventus”

In the world of football, sometimes it takes just a chance meeting to change the course of a club’s history. This was certainly the case for Arsenal, as a fortuitous encounter between Thierry Henry and Arsène Wenger set the stage for one of the most significant signings in the club’s history.

Henry, who remains Arsenal’s all-time leading scorer with 228 goals, played a pivotal role in the club’s success during his time. He was instrumental in the title-winning squads of 2001-02 and 2003-04 and contributed to the Gunners’ remarkable run to the 2006 Champions League final. His legacy at Arsenal was further solidified when he returned for a brief stint in 2012, helping the team secure Champions League qualification.

Reflecting on the moment that led to his move to Arsenal, Henry recounted how he and Wenger crossed paths years after Wenger had left his position at Monaco. “A few years after Arsène left Monaco, he came to watch a game between Juventus and Udinese that I played in,” Henry shared. “After the match, I was going back to Paris and he was on the same plane. He told me he’d been at the game. We exchanged numbers and he told me that he didn’t understand why I was playing on the wing. At the time, I was actually playing as a wing-back!”

Wenger’s insight into Henry’s potential was clear. “He told me I was wasting my time and that he remembered me as a no. 9. He said it would be great if we could meet again, and the rest is history,” Henry recalled.

Since leaving Arsenal in 2018, Wenger has not returned to management, but he has been followed into coaching by his former protégé. Henry has taken on a role leading France’s under-23 team, guiding them to the Olympic football semi-finals.
