AC Milan renew Interest in USMNT midfielder Johnny Cardoso

Start

AC Milan has reignited their pursuit of United States national team midfielder Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis. However, the Spanish club’s valuation of the player exceeds €20 million, presenting a potential obstacle for the Italian giants.

The Rossoneri had previously expressed interest in Cardoso last month, facing competition from clubs like Fiorentina, Atletico Madrid, and Manchester United. Milan views Cardoso as an alternative to their primary target, AS Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana, who is expected to cost around €25 million.

Recent reports from COPE suggest that Milan’s €20 million offer for Cardoso falls short of Real Betis’ expectations. The La Liga side is reportedly seeking a fee closer to €30 million for the 22-year-old defensive midfielder. At this price point, Milan might prefer to focus their efforts on securing Fofana instead.

Cardoso, who will turn 23 next month, joined Real Betis from Brazilian club Internacional for €6 million in January 2024. Born in the United States, he moved to Brazil at a young age, developing his skills in South American football before making the jump to Europe.

In a related development, Milan’s pursuit of Fofana received a boost as their main competitor, West Ham United, appears to have secured the signing of Guido Rodriguez, also from Real Betis. This could potentially clear the path for Milan to intensify their efforts to bring Fofana to the San Siro.
