Giorgio Chiellini is set to make a highly anticipated return to Juventus in September, this time in a managerial role. The former captain, who left the club in May 2022 after a tearful farewell at the Allianz Stadium, will begin his new journey as an apprentice executive.
La Gazzetta dello Sport report how Chiellini, who turns 40 this month, will work closely with the business side of the club, particularly with CEO Maurizio Scanavino. His role will focus on learning the inner workings of the organization, from financial aspects to marketing strategies. This transition from the pitch to the boardroom is seen as a natural progression for the Italian legend, who already holds a degree in Business Administration.
During his time in the United States with Los Angeles FC, Chiellini gained valuable experience in management, preparing him for this new chapter. Many within the Juventus circle see him as a potential Karl-Heinz Rummenigge-like figure for the club, capable of success both on and off the field.
Initially, Chiellini’s role will be more operational than technical. He won’t be involved in transfer dealings or direct team management but will instead focus on the club as a business entity. This approach differs from the roles of former players like Pavel Nedved, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, or Paolo Maldini at their respective clubs.
Chiellini’s return marks the completion of Juventus’ management revolution, which began with the arrival of Cristiano Giuntoli as technical director and continued with the addition of his trusted collaborators. While the club has changed significantly since Chiellini’s departure as a player, he will find some familiar faces, including his twin brother Claudio, who serves as the sporting director for Juventus Next Gen.
