Ajax step up pursuit of Rugani at Farioli’s request

Start

Ajax are reportedly stepping up their efforts to sign Juventus defender Daniele Rugani, following a specific request from their new manager Francesco Farioli. The Dutch giants do not consider their current center-back Josip Sutalo as untouchable, with Bologna showing interest in the Croatian international.

Sportitalia journalist Alfredo Pedulla reports how Farioli, who has recently taken charge at Ajax, is said to be a big admirer of Rugani’s profile and has urged the club to persist in their pursuit. The Italian coach believes Rugani could be a valuable addition to strengthen Ajax’s backline for the upcoming season.

Initially, there was a significant gap between Ajax’s offer and Rugani’s wage demands. However, sources close to the club suggest that Ajax might be preparing another attempt to secure the Italian defender’s services, especially if Sutalo departs.

A potential solution being considered is a loan deal with an option to buy, which could suit both parties. This arrangement might also be appealing to Rugani, who is reportedly open to the idea of playing in the Netherlands.

While Rugani has received offers from Saudi Arabian clubs, he has not seriously considered these proposals so far. The prospect of playing under Farioli and competing in the Eredivisie seems to be a more attractive option for the 29-year-old defender.
