Torino fans protest against club president Cairo with provocative banner

Start

The discontent among Torino supporters towards the club’s president Urbano Cairo continues to simmer. A new banner of dissent was displayed outside the Olimpico-Grande Torino stadium, reading: “We’re not asking for 50 million, just for you to get out of our b***s.”

Calciomercato report how this provocative message refers to Cairo’s recent press conference statements, where he addressed the club’s financial situation and future plans. Cairo had said:

“We’re not in a good position right now. We’ve had six years of financial losses, which is a burden. But it’s not a fault not to have 50 million to invest in Torino every year. No one can blame me for that. We need to find a sustainable path. For us, that means developing our youth academy to produce players for the first team, and scouting to find affordable talents who can become important players.”

Cairo continued, acknowledging fan expectations while defending the club’s recent performances:

“The expectation is higher, and it’s right for fans to have that. We see it in every club. But in the last 12 years, we’ve finished in the top half of the table eight times. In the last two years, we’ve fought for European spots, losing out even after the season ended, like this year. And in the previous season, until the last match against Inter… It’s not such a negative trajectory, but everything can be improved, and we need to do better.”

The president also admitted to past mistakes, stating:

“As far as I’m concerned, the mistake I made in 2018/2019 was doing something more for our balance sheets that we couldn’t afford.”
