Newcastle United are preparing to initiate a new round of negotiations in their pursuit of AC Milan’s center-back Malick Thiaw. The Magpies, having already secured Lloyd Kelly on a free transfer from Bournemouth, are still in the market for another central defender due to long-term injuries to Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles.
La Gazzetta dello Sport report how Thiaw, a 22-year-old German international, has emerged as Newcastle’s primary target. However, initial discussions with AC Milan failed to reach an agreement. The newspaper outlines how Newcastle’s initial offer of around €30 million, including performance-related bonuses, fell short of Milan’s €40 million valuation.
Despite the initial setback, Newcastle remain optimistic about reaching a compromise. Thiaw, who joined Milan from Schalke in 2022 for approximately €7 million, has since become a crucial part of the Italian club’s defense, making 30 appearances across all competitions last season.
While AC Milan is reluctant to part with Thiaw, his contract situation – set to expire in 2027 – may present an opportune moment for a sale. The Italian club has reportedly identified RB Salzburg’s Strahinja Pavlovic as a potential replacement, with confidence in beating Atletico Madrid to his signature.
In addition to their defensive reinforcement plans, Newcastle is also looking to strengthen their right-wing attack, potentially casting doubt over Miguel Almiron’s future at the club.
As negotiations resume, both clubs will be looking to find common ground on Thiaw’s valuation, with Newcastle hoping to secure the promising defender to bolster their backline for the upcoming season.
