Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has addressed the growing interest in midfielder Matt O’Riley, particularly from Italian side Atalanta. The 23-year-old Danish player has attracted attention from several top European clubs, with Atalanta considering him as a potential replacement or backup for Teun Koopmeiners.
Calciomercato detail how Celtic have so far rejected all approaches for O’Riley, including Atalanta’s latest offer of around €17-18 million. The Scottish club values the player, who is under contract until June 30, 2027, at a minimum of €25 million.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of a friendly match against Manchester City in North Carolina, Rodgers commented on O’Riley’s situation:
“He knows it’s a privilege to play for Celtic. Celtic is a club where you can progress, but you’re not obliged to, and it’s a very difficult club to leave. Of course, with the salaries being offered to players, it’s a real challenge for Celtic to compete at that level.”
Rodgers emphasized the club’s calm approach to the situation, stating:
“He knows what he has here. We’re all quite relaxed about it. Every player has a value, we know that. You saw him in the game the other night, he’s working very well, he’s very focused.”
The Celtic manager acknowledged the attention O’Riley has been receiving due to his performances and professionalism:
“Obviously, when you’re a really good player, especially if you’re young, committed, and professional like he is, then you attract attention. He’s working very well, and there’s nothing to report about him.”
As the transfer window progresses, Celtic appears to be in no rush to sell their prized asset, with Rodgers confident in O’Riley’s commitment to the club. However, the manager’s comments suggest an awareness of the financial challenges Celtic faces in retaining top talent when competing with higher-paying leagues.
