Arsenal have emerged as a strong contender for the signature of Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori, following his impressive performances for both club and country. The 22-year-old Italian international has caught the eye of several top clubs after a stellar season with Bologna and a standout showing at Euro 2024.
Bologna’s technical director, Sartori, recently addressed Calafiori’s future in an interview with Sky Sport, stating: “We will try to keep Calafiori, but if significant offers arrive, we will have to consider them. I don’t think he will go to Juventus; he will probably go to a different market”.
According to Sky Sport Italia, the “different market” Sartori refers to could well be the Premier League, with Arsenal showing concrete interest in the versatile defender. Calafiori, who can play as both a left-back and center-back, has been valued by Bologna at between €40-50 million, a significant increase from the €4 million they paid for him just a year ago.
Arsenal’s interest in Calafiori comes as the club seeks to strengthen its defensive options, particularly on the left side. Manager Mikel Arteta has been unsatisfied with his current choices at left-back, and Calafiori’s ability to play multiple positions could make him an attractive option.
However, the Gunners face stiff competition for Calafiori’s signature. Chelsea, Liverpool, and Tottenham have also expressed interest in the defender. Additionally, Juventus was initially considered Calafiori’s preferred destination, but recent developments, including the appointment of former Bologna manager Thiago Motta at Juventus, have complicated matters.
As the transfer window progresses, it remains to be seen whether Arsenal can secure Calafiori’s services. The club’s existing relationship with Bologna, having previously signed Takehiro Tomiyasu, could prove advantageous in negotiations. However, Arsenal may need to act swiftly and decisively to fend off competition from other Premier League giants and convince Calafiori to choose England over staying in Italy.
