OFFICIAL: Roberto De Zerbi joins Marseille

Start

Former Brighton and Hove Albion coach Robeerto De Zerbi has agreed terms with Ligue 1 side Marseille to become their head coach. De Zerbi’s time at Brighton was marked by the club’s highest-ever Premier League finish of sixth place and their first qualification for European competition. The Italian coach has previously been linked with other high-profile Premier League jobs, including Manchester United and Liverpool. Before his stint at Brighton, De Zerbi managed Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine and Sassuolo in Italy.

De Zerbi, 45, will succeed Jean-Louis Gasset at Marseille. Gasset retired after a short-term contract following Gennaro Gattuso’s departure in February. Marseille, who finished a disappointing eighth last season, expects to finalize De Zerbi’s appointment in the coming days.

In the meantime, Brighton has appointed 31-year-old Fabian Hürzeler as their new head coach. Hürzeler, a German national, led St Pauli to promotion to the Bundesliga last season.
