Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma says he is proud to retain his captaincy of the team: “We are a united group”. Italy’s training retreat for the Euros has begun, with the Azzurri having gathered at Coverciano on Friday to start their preparations; among the new faces and experienced heads is Donnarumma, confirmed as captain by Spalletti. The goalkeeper took the opportunity to speak with Sky Sport Italia ahead of the start of the competition:
“The armband carries a lot of responsibility. I am very proud to wear it, it’s exciting and a privilege. I try to set an example, to be myself. I’ve had many examples like Chiellini, Bonucci, or Buffon, so I also take something from them. There are many leaders in this team, everyone should feel like captains and be examples for the team. The important thing is to have a unique and united group, a significant bond has been created among all of us.”
The national team can rely on important values, and this is well-known by the number 1, who affirmed: “We have quality, as well as a great coach who will surely make us feel important. We know the results he has brought in previous years, even off the field, he makes us feel very good.
“I thank him for the trust he gives me every time, listening to a coach with all this experience is very important to me. We will have everything to have a great Euros. He had a great experience in Napoli; he gets emotional every time he talks about it. But now he is our coach, and we hope to bring joy to the whole country.”
A tough group for Italy, commented on by the goalkeeper: “The group is tough, but it is also tough for others because they know they will face a strong Italy. We must approach each game as if it were a final. We need to prepare well because all the games will be tough. I think everyone can contribute something important.”
Finally, the goalkeeper spoke about his relationship with Buffon, the Azzurri’s team leader: “I have a splendid relationship with Buffon. It’s important to have him with us because even with just one glance, he gives a lot. Having Gigi speaking and giving advice, considering the history he has, is crucial.”
