Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini hailed his teams’ performance in their 3-0 Europa League final victory over Bayer Leverkusen: ‘The way we won is extraordinary.’ An incredible hat-trick from Ademola Lookman secured La Dea their first European trophy, beating the undefeated Bundesliga champions.
Speaking with Sky Sport Italia in the post-match, Gasperini spoke about the significance of the way in which his team won the match:
“The way we won is extraordinary. We defeated very strong teams like Liverpool, Sporting, and Leverkusen. It was memorable.”
Gasperini emphasized the importance of an attacking approach: “We played only to win; we needed offensive threat because just defending isn’t enough. Our unbeaten run? We deserved it without a doubt. Winning the Europa League is a great achievement.”
He continued, “I don’t think I’m better than I was this afternoon; a trophy doesn’t change much. Otherwise, only Juventus or Inter would win. But teams like Bologna and Cagliari have also won.”
