Pioli: ‘Roma match is the most important match of the season so far’

Stefano Pioli previewed Milan’s upcoming Europa League match with Roma, calling it the Rossoneri’s most important match to date this season. The two sides face off at the San Siro on Thursday evening, and speaking with the press ahead of the game, Pioli explained what he expects from the opposition:

In light of the recent abolition of the away goals rule in European competitions, Pioli was asked whether anything changes regarding the importance of winning the first leg at home. He responded, “It doesn’t make that much of a difference. We have been accustomed to playing the first leg at home in the Europa League, and against Rennes and Slavia, we managed to secure promising leads. Our objective for tomorrow’s match remains the same: to gain an advantage. The tie will span 180 minutes, so it’s crucial to not merely close the discussion tomorrow, but to secure a favorable position.”

Regarding Roma’s evolution under manager Daniele De Rossi, Pioli emphasized the significance of the upcoming fixture for both teams. “I believe De Rossi will field his strongest lineup tomorrow. It’s a crucial objective for both clubs,” Pioli remarked. “We are solely focused on tomorrow’s match, disregarding thoughts of future league fixtures. Roma has made tactical adjustments under De Rossi’s guidance, and while we haven’t revisited their league encounters, we are fully prepared for tomorrow’s challenge.”

Asked about the comparison between the current Milan squad and the one that clinched the Scudetto, Pioli echoed Bennacer’s sentiment of viewing it as a different Milan. “I agree with Ismael’s characterization. Many players have changed, and there’s been a shift in our approach and style of play,” Pioli noted. “The Scudetto-winning Milan achieved an extraordinary feat. Our current objective is to reclaim that winning mentality. We’re in a good moment, but the most crucial phase of the season lies ahead, which will ultimately determine our success or failure.”

In discussing the matchup’s significance, Pioli emphasized the importance of teamwork over individual prowess. “Being a cohesive team is paramount,” Pioli affirmed. “De Rossi has done a commendable job instilling unity within Roma. We expect a formidable opponent tomorrow, and our focus remains on adapting to their tactics while capitalizing on our strengths.”

Looking ahead to the clash with Roma, Pioli anticipated a European atmosphere and expressed his desire for an engaging spectacle. “Tomorrow’s match will evoke a European competition ambiance. While the Champions League sets the pinnacle, yesterday’s matches showcased fantastic football with occasional errors,” Pioli commented. “We aim to provide an entertaining display while remaining resolute in our approach.”
