Antonio Conte’s former assistant, Angelo Alessio, believes he would take over the Napoli job on one condition. Alessio was speaking during the “Si Gonfia la Rete” segment on Radio Crc (via CN24), and shared his insights on his friend Conte, explaining why he thinks Conte would take on the role with the Partenopei:
“Conte is known to all, he lives and breathes football matches incredibly. With him, I’ve experienced beautiful, challenging, but ultimately victorious moments. Conte could say yes to Napoli if he finds a project that aims to maintain a high technical level of the team, thus being able to compete for victory. However, if Osimhen, as I read, is leaving this summer, it’s difficult to foresee Conte’s arrival at Napoli at the moment. Of course, everything can change because football moves fast, but if what is being reported is true, Conte will go to a club where there is a project focused on winning. If De Laurentiis brings in Conte, he knows very well that there will be demands, and it will be up to the club to acquire players functional to the coach’s game plan.
“At the moment, it’s all talk, but certain things need to be clarified before starting a relationship that could otherwise become difficult down the road. Over the years, De Laurentiis has elevated Napoli, from winning the Scudetto to finishing eighth, seven points away from the UEFA places, which is incredible. The club has made many mistakes this year, but I believe De Laurentiis wants to return to the top levels and will have to do something. If he manages to bring in Conte, it would solve many issues. Conte would ask for technical guarantees, and Napoli has a foundation, so it would then be about acquiring the right players needed to compete for the title.
“I read that Napoli is also looking for a sporting director, a general manager, but it won’t be easy to get them. There are few like Marotta at that level, so it’s also difficult for Napoli to acquire a director of that caliber. When you win and then fire the coach, the first alarm bell rings. When you win and there are players nearing the end of their contracts, it’s clear that those players need a salary adjustment, so from the start, the club found itself renewing financial commitments and creating initial problems. Then the change of coach was decisive, and if the players who arrived didn’t perform according to expectations, maintaining that high standard isn’t possible. I hope Napoli has already identified Osimhen’s replacement who offers certain guarantees. We need to find the right player, and the task isn’t simple.
“Conte changed the formation against Napoli to best accommodate all the players we had in the squad. After a few weeks at Juve, we switched to 3-5-2, and we continued with that formation. The rivalry between Napoli and Juventus exists and will always exist, and for Juve, Napoli has always been a difficult obstacle to overcome. I hope Napoli can provide the right guarantees to Antonio Conte, and by guarantees, I mean giving the coach the opportunity to compete. I coached in Indonesia, I was convinced by Marco Motta, it was a positive experience, but not one I would repeat; I wouldn’t go back.”
