Former Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge says he’s not sure if the club will bring Joshua Zirkzee back to Germany this summer. The Dutch forward has enjoyed a remarkable rise this season at Bologna under Thiago Motta, and has caught the attention of top clubs across Europe, with AC Milan among those closely monitoring his progress.
However, one team stands out with an inevitable priority: Bayern Munich, the club from which Bologna’s sporting director, Walter Sabatini, acquired the talented forward in the first place, with a buy-back clause set at €40 million.
In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, former CEO and president of Bayern Munich and current member of the club’s supervisory board, shed light on the Bavarian club’s summer transfer strategy. He stated:
“We have just appointed a new Sports Director, Max Eberl. He needs to demonstrate the great qualities that I believe he has, and I don’t want to influence him. I don’t know if the clause will be activated or not, but we will consider it, and it will be part of the summer market.”
Reflecting on Zirkzee’s time at Bayern, Rummenigge praised the young striker, saying, “I remember my last year as CEO; he played well, and when Flick put him on the field, he always scored important goals, not the fourth or fifth of the match. He won us important games: I am happy for him that he is doing well, he deserves it, I have always seen him play well for us. His misfortune was having someone like Lewandowski ahead of him.”
