Mourinho: ‘We lost because of a VAR penalty’

Start

Jose Mourinho vented his frustration at Roma’s 1-0 loss to city rivals Lazio: “We lost because of a penalty from modern football.” New Giallorossi signing Dean Huijsen conceded a penalty in the second half, but the match was marred by a series of incidents between the rival fans, as well as three red cards being handed out over the 90 minutes. Speaking with Sportmediaset, Mourinho blamed the loss on VAR, claiming the penalty was a result of ‘modern football’:

“It’s always painful when it’s a derby. We have great difficulties and we always struggle with it. Today we lose because of a penalty from modern football, from VAR, which the referee doesn’t give 3 metres away. Usually Orsato lets it play, but then someone sitting in front of a computer who decides to call it and the player makes the show for the slightest contact.

“Players of 20 years ago would never jump in like those of today. In the first half we were the better placed on the pitch, then without Dybala we have less quality and link-up. The goal we conceded is ridiculous, it came from a throw-in by us, it’s not possible. Then whoever scores first with Orsato wins, because then he doesn’t play anymore. Huijsen is a top guy, he deserves these opportunities”.

“For Dybala the usual muscle problem, he played a physical match and two days of recovery for him are few. He wanted to play this game, we have people who go over the limit all the time like Mancini who takes painkillers to play and then can’t train. Paulo is not like that because of a different physical structure. I’m disappointed with some players, we have to do more”.

“We have lost a derby and it weighs especially for our incredible fans. I’m disappointed with some players, we have to give more. Now we want to give our best in the two competitions”.
