Milan full-back Alessandro Florenzi is the latest Italian player to be under investigation for illegal gambling. News agency AGI reported yesterday that the 32-year-old is under investigation from the Turin Public Prosecutors office for allegedly betting on games of chance, rather than on sports.
Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli was recently handed a seven-month ban after admitting to using illegal gambling platforms to bet on football matches. Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali was handed a 10-month ban after admitting the same charge.
Aston Villa Nicolo Zanioli is still under investigation and has given evidence, but has insisted that he only ever placed bets on video poker and blackjack. Florenzi will reportedly face the same charge, and could face a lesser punishment as a result.
The former Roma full-back is expected in Turin in the coming days to begin his deposition.
