Tonali reaches agreement with FIGC on ban for betting

Start

Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali has reportedly reached an agreement with the FIGC prosecutor following his involvement in using illegal betting platforms. The 23-year-old spoke with Italian football’s governing body last week, agreeing a plea deal after admitting that he placed bets on football matches, including involving his former team, AC Milan.

Italian news site Panorama report that Tonali will be banned from playing for 10 month, meaning his 2023-24 season is over. The youngster is expected to return in August 2024, meaning he will also likely miss EURO 2024 with the Italian national side.

The punishment also includes 8 months of  alternative punishments which will involve 16 meetings with youngsters to warn them of the dangers of gambling.

The agreement is expected to be validated by the Prosecutor General of Sport at CONI before the transition to UEFA for the international extension of the punishment.
