Roma have issued a statement backing both Nicola Zalewski and Stephan El Shaarawy following allegations they were part of the gambling scandal that’s swept across Italian football. Nicolo Fagioli, Sandro Tonali and Nicolo Zaniolo are the only players officially under investigation at present, but gossip columnist Fabrizio Corona has suggested that El Shaarawy and Zalewski were also involved in illegal gambling.
Roma have now issued an official statement condemning the speculation and supporting their players:
“In response to recent rumours regarding the alleged involvement of some of the club’s players in the football betting investigation, AS Roma expresses its full support for Nicola Zalewski and Stephan El Shaarawy, who have been subjected to reputation-damaging speculation.
The club has total confidence in Nicola and Stephan when they claim to have nothing to do with this matter.”
