Lukaku: ‘Talking to Mourinho was enough to convince me to move to Roma’

New Roma striker Romelu Lukaku says it only took a phone call from coach Jose Mourinho to convince him to join the Giallorossi. The Belgian international arrived on a one-year loan, and speaking in his first interview with the clubs official TV channel, Lukaku explained his motivations for making the move back to Serie A this summer:

“Mourinho texted me saying I should expect something epic upon my arrival. I never expected to see so many people. It really moved me because something like that doesn’t happen very often and it stimulates me to give everything for the team.”

“It was really nice to see fans so excited for my arrival and I can’t wait to start playing for this team.

“One phone call was enough to convince me to come here. The Friedkins called me a few days before the deal. We talked for half an hour about the ambitions they have for this club and for the fans and then everything went downhill from there.”

“I talked with the Friedkins about what they expect from the team and from me. I listened and now it’s time to get serious. I trust this team and we have to work together to make something good happen. We have to be humble, focus and never stop working, trying to improve day after day to achieve good results. This is my way of living things. I hope to help the team reach their maximum.”

“Mourinho? I always wanted to work with him ever since I was a small child. For the third time I get to work with him. He knows me well, he knows my family well and he knows me as a man. I know him well too. Together we can do beautiful things. We have a good team here. We have to work and improve game by game.”
