Inzaghi: ‘We’re missing a defender’

Start

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi was pleased with his sides 2-0 win over Monza, but admitted that his squad is lacking a defender. The Nerazzurri were in control for large periods of the match, with Lautaro Martinez scoring a brace before being replaced by new boys Marko Arnautovic and Marcus Thuram. Speaking in his post-match presser, Inzaghi talked through the match and his tactical choices, explaining why he feels the team still needs a little depth:

Lautaro’s change, why didn’t Correa come in? Did the market have something to do with it?

“Absolutely not, it’s a choice. Mkhitaryan was fine, he can easily play there. Correa is working very well, I had to choose. I am satisfied with everyone, even those who did not go in.”

Among the imperfections you’ve seen is the lack of nastiness in the goal area? Is the attack okay like that?

“We remain rigid about the market, which will close at the end of the month. There is the Saudi Arabian variant, we don’t know what will happen, We are missing an important player in defence, the club is doing everything to bring him.”

Did you expect this revolution in the market?

“We had decided, together with the club, to change a lot. A major change is taking place, we lost top players in Italy in their role. Good young ones have arrived, experienced ones who will help others to settle in.”

Did you expect the new ones to fit in so well?

“Yes, because they trained well, including Arnautovic who trained three times with desire and spirit. Bisseck is young and a prospect, I put him in because Darmian had a bad sprain.”

Can we see the 3-5-1-1 you played at the end again?

“The form remained the same, Mkhitaryan had to take Lautaro’s place. I am satisfied.”

You mentioned the ‘Arab variant’, in what sense for Inter?

“I say that it does not apply only to me, but to all coaches. With this variant maybe you have ideas in your head that then in the continuation can change. I hope this is not the case for me. We know that we have to do something in the entrance, I have the desire to have two players who compete in their role.”
