Savićević: ‘Americans don’t understand football’

Start

Former Milan midfielder Dejan Savićević is the latest former player to weigh in on Paolo Maldini’s sacking: ‘Americans don’t understand football, they don’t realise it’s not like the NBA.’ Club legend Maldini was axed by owner Gerry Cardinale on Monday, a decision that shocked the larger footballing world, including a host of former Rossoneri players. Speaking with Sky Sport Italia (as quoted by Il Corriere dello Sport), Savićević lashed out at the decision to fire his former teammate, and also shared his thoughts on this evenings Champions League final:

“I did not expect Maldini’s departure, Milan won the Scudetto last year when no one expected it. What has happened now is unknown. In the United States they experience sports differently than we do: they don’t understood you can’t play football like in the NBA.”

“The Champions League final? It is difficult for Inter to win, City are very strong. Guardiola is the best coach in the World, it is strange that City did not win the Champions League already last year. Nobody plays like them. There is more quality in their midfield with Bernardo Silva, Grealish, Gundogan and De Bruyne. At Inter there are also great players like Barella, Lautaro and Brozovic.”
